I stumbled up the porch steps, disoriented.

I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to regulate my breathing in order to heal more quickly and efficiently.

After a few deep breathing exercises, I reached forward, and, using my good arm, rang the doorbell.

A young male human answered the door, and stared at me suspiciously. “Who are you and what do you want?”

“My name is Vera,” I said formally. “Nice to meet your acquaintance. May I come inside your home to rest?”

He gave me a weird look. “What?”

My head tilted in confusion. “Do you not speak English? I just assumed that you did considering that this is Houston, Texas, America, Earth, Star System R-113 that you spoke

He waved his hands out in front of him. “Wait a minute. Star system? R-113? What does that mean?”

I stood there in silence.

“Well?” he asked, placing his hands on his hips.

“You told me to wait for a minute.”

He rolled his eyes. “Smart aleck.” he muttered under his breath. “Let yourself in.”

I nodded and followed him into a room that smelled strongly of food.

“So what’s wrong with your arm?” he asked conversationally, munching on a red fruit the humans refer to as apples’.

“Hmm?” I glanced down at my left arm which my right hand was clenching around at the elbow. “Oh, that. Well the bone popped out and I had to push it back in, so I’m trying to give it time to heal.”

He stopped chewing for a moment. “Liar.”

I shook my head. “I didn’t try to deceive you, Max.”

“How do you know my name?” he asked in a sharp, unfriendly tone.

“Because, I know your female guardian, whom I must speak with, and she knows you.”

“My female guardian? What does that even mean?” Max asked angrily.

I struggled for words. “I believe for you humans, the term would be mother.’”

Max’s eyebrows knit together. “You know my mom? How?” the unfriendly tone was back.

The lamp behind him made a crackling noise and flickered slightly, but if he noticed, he didn’t show it.

Suddenly, the front door swung open and a woman in her late thirties walked in, holding bags of food. “Max, honey, I’m home-”

And that’s around the time that she spotted me. Her arms tightened around the bags and her fists clenched slightly. “Vera. I haven’t seen you in a while.”

I gave a curt nod. “Ten years.” I pointed at the lamp. “Does Max know about-”

“No,” she said in a stop right there’ voice. “Nope, this is not the time to bring things like that up.”

“Mom,” Max said in confusion. “What’s she talking about?”

The lights began to crackle again.
